MinebeaMitsumi Group, a global provider of Electro Mechanics Solutions™, and its European Research & Development center, Paradox Engineering, experts in wireless technologies and IoT solutions for smart cities, join the uCIFI Alliance as a Sponsor Member to contribute to the development of truly open, multi-supplier, interoperable, multi-transport wireless communication solutions for the smart city and smart utility markets. Gianni Minetti explains why his group has chosen to be in.
What is your company position about open standard technologies?
Our technology vision has open standards as a basis and at its core. If we look back to the history of ICT and of the Internet, we understand that in the 80s out of multiple proprietary standards it turned out that the open one was the one to win the market. No Internet, no smartphone or app as we know them today could exist or have this degree of development ad diffusion had standards been proprietary. As a technology provider who has always been agnostic to the application, concentrating its efforts on the development of an urban network supporting any field devices independently of the make, we couldn’t be more convinced of the fact that open standards are the way to go to truly foster the transformation of Cities into Smart Cities.
Why did you join uCIFI?
We believe a true and wide adoption of Smart City technologies can only be possible through open standard based solutions, allowing Cities to remove concerns and headaches linked to suppliers and letting them concentrate on their real needs: providing communities with higher quality of life and sustainability and with better economy. We are glad that a group of leading technology players share our vision; we are convinced that joining forces to bring this vision of interoperable technologies and platforms to reality will turn to the true benefit of Cities.
What do you think uCIFI and your future uCIFI-compatible products will bring to your customers?
Today, city managers struggle to find the technology which is good for their current challenges, and that will also be the right one for the challenges to come. But divination is a hard work! uCIFI based technologies will free customers from this burden: City managers will know that any choice today does not hinder their future ones. Trust in technology will increase, as will adoption in turn, because openness and transparency are the foundations of trust. The potential unleashed by this virtuous circle is unimaginable, as unimaginable was the world as we know it today prior to the advent of The Internet.
